A PROCESSION OF LESSONS AND CAROLS FOR ADVENT
To follow along, download the bulletin here.
WE WELCOME YOU!
Celebrated by Christians since the fourth century, the season of Advent
includes the four Sundays before the Feast of the Nativity. In the
Anglo/Roman/Lutheran liturgical traditions, Advent is the season of
hope, a reflective time for personal preparation as we commence our
journey to Bethlehem to see and rejoice in the miracle at the stable that
Christmas Eve so many years ago. As the secular world celebrates
Christmas with the traditional carols, the hustle and bustle of the
season between Thanksgiving and December 25, liturgical Christians
reserve the religious celebrations and traditional carols for the season
of the Nativity of our Lord, which commences at sunset on Christmas
Eve and culminates in Epiphany twelve days later (hence the popular
secular carol: The Twelve Days of Christmas). The Day of Epiphany on
January 6 concludes the cycle, commemorating the visit to the Christ
Child by the Magi from the East.
The service of A Procession of Lessons and Carols for Advent was first
introduced in 1934 by Eric Milner-White, Dean of King's College
Chapel at Cambridge University in England, and followed a similar
format to his Nine Lessons and Carols for Christmas Eve, from 1918,
lessons followed by several carols, which has been adopted in some
form by many Christian Churches throughout the world.
May your Advent season prepare your hearts for the joy of Christmas!
